Only five? Despite everything going on, day to day, that makes us grieve or stew, when you stop and think about it, there is so much beauty. If you’ll just take a moment to lift your eyes and cast them over your surroundings, even in the darkest of times and seemingly run down of places, there is something. What those things are tend to be unique to the beholder. That’s the best part of this question. It asks your opinion, not for an absolute. Can there even be an absolute?
My list could be so much longer than five. Being able to say that with certainty speaks to how blessed I truly am. I am privileged. Yet, there has been enough suffering in my life to teach me that it can all go away in an instant. Therefore, the beauty that I find in the world, I treasure. Let’s see how many on my list you can agree with…
1. Canines
Any kind of canine, wild or domesticated. These animals make my heart soar. There is something so comforting in their shape, their movements, their sounds, even their smell. Whether they’re pups, juveniles, or adults, they warm my soul. I feel so connected to them.
When my dog, Sadie Sue, passed away, I felt amputated. I cannot define myself, I told friends, without a dog at my hip. Diana and her hounds.
2. Babies
Babies are inherently cute, but there is something more beautiful than just the way the wee spuds look. It’s the freshness. I don’t believe we’re born blank slates, but I do believe that the newness to them is important to pay attention to. I’m not sure what it tells us, but I know that watching my daughter grow and learn, has been very healing for me. This innocence is a treasure beyond any estimable monetary value.
3. The Closeness of My Family
When all else falls away, fails, or falters, my family is still there. Not every day has been perfect, but they very nearly have been. To have the support of both a mother and father, and also my brother, is a huge treasure to claim. Without them, there are so many things I could not have accomplished, such as college, following my dreams of writing, knowing how to raise and train dogs, cook, or have a daughter on my own, and so on.
4. Art
All art, whether visual or auditory, tactile or ethereal. Music. Paintings. Books. Digital. Traditional. Because it is a window into the impressive human mind. Oh, the human mind. Such wonders.
5. That Mood You Get When…
That mood you get when the day has been sort of long and you put on some music, and sit back to chill. Your mind drifts to another place, and you feel the weariness dissipate, first becoming an inexplicable sadness (perhaps mourning the loss of moments), and becoming a sense of restoration. It’s like you just crossed the threshold of a new chapter, and the majority of things are tucked safely in the past, the future lies ahead with promise once more. The mixed bag of emotions has always fascinated in these moments of rest and reflection. I find that music is a great way to engage this kind of reset button. These are also the time that I spend playing scenes out in my head for my books. Fantastic feelings.
