jiangshi.
A fallen human; vampire.
Each soul has a counterpart in the dark realm of Jahannam. It is the form that one of the members of the group will take on when their atman burns down. Duta become danava, and so on. It’s important to realize that these create other races out of the ashes of destruction. Further, it is a sign that such a state is not an end. An atman can heal from such a fall, though it may be hard to accomplish.
In the case of humans, they are no less susceptible of burning down. In the time period of the books, they are being targeted by the danava rulers as a means for taking over Samsara, and, through that realm, getting back at and to Zion.
The burned down atman of a human causes physical changes in the sattva. These changes continue through stages. The first stage is being feverish, with lit eyes that sometimes swim with blood. The flash of the eyes may confuse a soul experiencing this by making them think they’re gaining powers indicative of a rising. However, the glow or light is not lasting, as it is in Duta. The next stage is to find themselves either in the realm of Samsara or in Jahannam. A thirst for blood rises, and they will drink the blood of any incarnated thing, or the energy of atmans they come into contact with. The next stage is that the human has grown bloated on all they’ve ingested. They now resemble more of a pig, insatiable and driven like an animal. Many Jiangshi pass this stage to learn to control their appetites and resemble a ghostly version of themselves in the second stage. They still feed upon atman, which is a honey nectar to them. Blood is less appetizing.
