EXPLORERS SOUGHT!
A bold, exciting proposition, seeking a stalwart companion for …..ADVENTURE!
‘And beyond the Wild Wood again?’ he asked: ‘Where it’s all blue and dim, and one sees what may be hills or perhaps they mayn’t, and something like the smoke of towns, or is it only cloud-drift?’
‘Beyond the Wild Wood comes the Wide World,’ said the Rat. ‘And that’s something that doesn’t matter, either to you or me. I’ve never been there, and I’m never going, nor you either, if you’ve got any sense at all. Don’t ever refer to it again, please.’
With all apologies to Kenneth Grahame…
Sounds like a simple enough thing to do, eh? But, do we do it? Do we? Or, do we find ourselves, after having reached a certain comfort level in life, lounged on a plateau of sameness, resting in the confines of what we like and know? That, of course, is fine; it’s all very nice.
But–what of the larger world around you? What of things left unexperienced? Avenues unexplored? Is there not more to life, to the world, to the human experience, than the cozy familiar nooks of ourselves? Of course there is!
Think of this: Maybe you always wondered what it was like to go to a horse-racing track and place a bet, sit in on a religious service of an unfamiliar faith, check out a community festival celebrating a heritage not of your own, go to a political rally, perform at an open-mic-night poetry reading, go on a hunt for the perfect dive-bar, see a foreign film, try yoga, go hot air ballooning, visit a strip club, volunteer at a homeless shelter, et al.
You see where this is heading? Those are simple examples of the possibilities beyond your door. But, unless you are a horse-bettin’, poly-faithed, multicultural, bi-partisan, poetry-readin’, old-man-bar patron with a penchant for meditation, aerodynamic hijinks, burlesque and charitable acts of mercy, well then you need to explore deeper, boyo.
So! When are you going to explore those avenues, see those sites, try those experiences? Later, you say. When is that, exactly, hmmm? Around the corner from someday, or even worse, someday, maybe? Eeek. No, that won’t do. Not at all. Do you know why?
As they croon in that Woody Allen musical: It’s later than you think.
Good people, the purpose of this proposed exercise is to serve as a window, a conduit, a portal to expose, share, and discover the larger world around us; see other facets to life that you may never have known to exist. Sure, some of these events cost a few dollars, but many don’t cost a dime. This is not about living life recklessly and shirking responsibly. No, no. This is about being good to one’s self. To live life to your fullest human potential, to learn, grow and explore the wide world around us.
I mean, why are we here otherwise?
