Do you have a favorite piece of furniture? Take a picture, show and tell!

This is a great question, because furniture can be so fun. I don’t know about you, but I’d love to collect pieces to furnish a house to resemble an Alice In Wonderland cottage. Did you know, there is a company out there who makes such pieces? Indeed, there is! However, they’re costly. Not only is this due to their uniqueness but also the differences in building them. Each piece is bent, painted in bold colors, and evokes surrealism. Mass producing them takes a different means, sort of.

Furniture along the same lines are to be found on Etsy. These handmade pieces fit into such surreal décor perfectly, too. Each one made by hardworking artisans asks a fair price for the labor and creativity. I just don’t make enough. At least, I don’t make enough to outfit a whole home with such things. It would take many years. Yes, I have thought about turning my art skills to making them myself.

How would someone go about doing that? I’d rather find pieces via thrifting or garage sales and refinish them. My carpentry skills, despite a few turns at woodshop in school, aren’t up to snuff for furniture making. The amount of time it would take to learn this new skill would draw me too far off the path from writing and the art I currently do. I already work full time, going into vocational skills learning would really be too much to commit to. These skills are not easy to learn and hone. It takes master craftsman decades to get there. That’s why the pieces are worth so much and it is fair to ask such prices.

Not to despair, I did find a piece, although it is mass produced, but it fit in my budget. I tape most of my vlogs in this chair. I’ve draped a rug over the seat that used to lay under the dishes of my dog Max, because it reminds me of the little guy. To accent it, I have placed a large Mickey Mouse head pillow. It really just suits me. The chair isn’t the most comfortable spot on the house. That’s my the chair that used to serve as the nursing chair when my daughter was an infant. I used that to work from now, having covered it in a burgundy slip cover and Doctor Who Blanket.

Although my scroll-back button chair isn’t all that comfy, it makes me happy. I love to look at it from across the room and imagine it sitting among other similar pieces in a whimsical living room. Someday! Right now, it provides a flashy seat for my vlogs and puts a warm smile on my face. That’s perfectly enough.

My favorite piece of furniture isn’t something that I own. It is a piece of furniture I have wanted for a very long time though. There’s one on my Amazon.com wish list. I’ve often thought of throwing caution to the wind and just putting it on my credit card. Now, however, more than ever, just charging something is foolish. There are very important choices to make instead, like affording the roof over my little family’s heads. But, perhaps someday, I will have one.

Fainting couches are very romantic pieces of furniture. I’m not a romantic person at heart, but I do like the looks of sculpted furniture, tufted seats, scrolling arms and all of that style. Modern design really misses the mark in my opinion. The straight lines and lack of character are far too stark for my tastes.

As you might guess, I’m very much a fan of antique furniture starting at the turn of the 20th century to way back into the middle ages. That makes a lot of sense when you recall that I am a historian and historical fiction writer. I suppose dark fantasy also hints at that, because there is so much gothic design in the genre.

Fainting couches don’t have a back story for me. They just have caught my eye and held it for a long time. I’d love to add that I also have a bombay chest and victorian couch in my home decorating wish list. Having access to classic heavy wood furniture is a dream of mine that I hope to make reality one day. For the time being, I’m working with hand me down stuff from my family. It’s been a struggle getting the basics in life while paying off student debt and dealing with the standard American subpar wages, along with the lack of jobs. Having a degree doesn’t give you access to better paying jobs and it doesn’t open the door to higher paying jobs, except in a very few markets, and those markets are extremely competitive. If your grades aren’t up there, you don’t get to study—either you can’t get into universities or you will be in over your head. So, we do the best we can with what we are given and struggle forward to succeed, right? Let me tell you, even with a masters and a high GPA it’s still hard getting through those doors!

So, one day, I will have that couch to remind me that I won the struggle. That’s the plan anyway. Let’s go look at the furniture the other authors have to share with us…
