Zo and I hope this new drawing find you well and facing a brand new year with the promise of all good things for you and yours. If you find yourself struggling, as many do, this time of year, also know that you are not alone. I have often found it difficult to view the coming year with hope or ideas of the promise more time should give. Fireworks, though beautiful, felt surreally disappointing.
It’s hard to know if depression or circumstance places us in this sense of despondency when we’re in the middle of fighting for more than existence. Fireworks have long symbolized the fleeting emotions that burst upon the darkness and disappear as a wisp of smoke, the loud crack of their appearance a marked memory. Crack. Sizzle. The glow startles the eye. But, oh, they are lovely–just like emotions that may sting in the moment, reminding us that we are alive.
Thus, this drawing of image of Zo watching the fireworks in the winter cityscape sky reflect the nebulous mood of the holiday. Is it promise or threat? Until the year plays out, we have no idea, though our past can tend to inform the likelihood.
It is my wish that you all have a wonderful year and that the things you have needed find you, that at last you have peace, and that at the end of the year, when the fireworks come again, you will view them with greater awe and love and so much less fear.
