Are humans better at creating or destroying?

Welcome back to another edition of the Open Book Blog Hop! If you’re new to the series, the authors included are grateful for your reads and appreciate, even more so, when you share our writings with your friends. If you’re new to the series, welcome aboard. A little bit of both. Seeing things from both sides was encouraged during my formative years, and is probably one of the greatest takeaways from my later studies. The broader picture has helped me to resolve issues, to ask better questions, and be a better writer. Much of success is found in being able to anticipate the things you may encounter on the way.

That’s why I answered both. Humanity is obviously a living thing, collectively or individually. But, more importantly, humans are complicated. That’s not necessarily humanity’s fault, either. Complication is the nature of the universe, as is change—something that requires both creation and destruction to complete its cycle.

Our species is more in touch with our nature than we allow ourselves to believe. Progress and change, also known as the march of time, requires the destruction and creation process in order for it to occur. If there was no change, then nothing would be destroyed and nothing created. Obviously, right?

Humanity has had centuries to perfect the back and forth of change. Yet, it always feels uncomfortable, can still be quite violent and upsetting. Maybe that’s the impetus to keep us moving forward. One aspect of our nature I still struggle with is the nature to make war. We are such a loving species, that it makes very little sense. But, then, there are those among us who buck the trend, as in having a lack of empathy (sociopathology or psychopathology are personality disorders known for their marked absence of empathy). That’s a tragic divergence, but actually makes sense in the bigger picture, when you realize that someone has to be the firestarter, so to speak. I’m not justifying abusive behavior, just stating that someone has to get the ball rolling, whether we want to or not, and it might be those who aren’t attached by feelings.

Before this gets into the muck and mire of evil versus good, and all the terrible things some of us humans have done, let’s move on. Humans are very talented creators and very efficient destroyers. It’s just a necessary part of the ebb and flow of not only our world, but the universe. Hopefully, in the future, humanity will reach a point where they are more graceful and easy with the process of destroying, leaving violence to history. I believe in us, and our creative ability.
