What am I? I’ll come right out and clear the air on that, because most who read this headline will think I’m a Christian defending my Bible. Well, then, you’d be wrong. I’m an agnostic. Yup, a fence sitter. The undecided. I find myself in a much better position here than those who have decided with little empirical evidence in either direction as to what is what as far as “GOD” is concerned. Oh, hubris.

That said, I lean Atheist. Why? I started my collegiate work in the Biological Sciences and switched to writing because of the sexism I faced when attempting to complete the degree. In other words, there was no help for me in calculus when I was lagging behind because the topic was unclear and the professor refused to assist me (Whoever he was at SUNY Morrisville, priding himself on teaching future male engineers only.) I ran into the same misogynistic rhetoric when inquiring about the computer programming degree at UAlbany – don’t bother women don’t finish the program – was the near word for word advice). I wanted to be a writer, but I wanted a career I would enjoy that would pay the bills too. Writing is a long hard road, and it doesn’t pay off unless you’re a lucky one. Trust me. Keep that day job, next Bestseller.

So anyway. Philosophy, history, and all other studies in between, I came to learn a lot, but most importantly, I learned that science and religion are two different entities that do not share the same space. The fighting between the religious and the anti-religious is often a display of the basest human emotions and waste of hot air to grace the planet. In short, you may defeat ‘religion’ but man will still use something to wage war, leverage power and supplant all others to rein above them. The suffering will not be eased by the lack of religion, and Dawkins and others are evidence of such. Their misogynistic rhetoric is aimed at half the population of the world. They refuse to include half the population. What does that sound like? Yup, religious groups staking their claims. It will not lead to less suffering, but rather to continued inequality. I mean, seriously, the bomb wasn’t dropped on Japan because the church decided it must be done. Blaming all wars on Christianity or this or that religion is misleading and displays a real lack of knowledge in history. It also shows a lack of reason or understanding of basic humanity.

If Atheists want to be the progressive movement they claim they are; if they wish to be the movement for reason – then they need to stop being a men’s club. Reason doesn’t support any notion that women are less worthy of atheism, progress or a seat at the table than their male counterparts. Feminism isn’t something they should be ‘bearing crosses’ over. Yet, I get screamed at by male ‘feminist’ atheists that they’re destroying religion for my benefit. Really? Cause you’re not destroying the ideology that supports sexism, so you’re not doing anything for my benefit but making it more difficult to build a case about sexism – because then you’ll all go, we destroyed those institutions that discriminated on gender, what more do you want?

We want representation. We want equality. We want you stop using misogyny to silence half the population when you disagree with them, because you’re acting exactly like those you purport to stand against.
