For a very long time, I was known among my friends as a style maven. It was more of a personal style know how. I didn’t study anything in the magazines. I didn’t care who was wearing what. I would shop, and put outfits together. The pulse of fashion was under my thumb without a stream of fashionista information coming in. Part of that probably came with working retail. Access to the newest on the rack spoiled me.
Over time, and changes of job, maybe even changes in fashion, my style cares have waned. I’d say I’ve gotten in a rut, to be honest. I have not been a fan of what is out there for years. Currently, I’m trending Eddie Bauer. I do like the look of casual, semi-hiking gear. When cargo pants came into fashion, I was never ready to let them go. Lately, I’ve been able to work them and camp shirts into my work attire.
I’d love to wear retro style dresses, but that would be awkward where I work. It’s very casual. Some have still made their way into my closet.
My style is very relaxed, as you can tell, although I like to dress well (or up) from time to time. Jeans and t-shirts are my main go to, paired with one of my many Converse Sneakers. I also do motorcycle boots and combat boots. I love boots!
Fall ranks as the top season in my closet. Most of my good clothes are when cooler weather hits. Most summer outfits are not my style, and I struggle to piece things together. What has been gathered over the years is held onto dearly. Like I said above, camp shirts. Capri’s are a great lifesaver at this time.
Other things that influence my style choices are the unspoken dress codes of the office. Many of the places I have worked did not allow open-toed shoes, and it was uncomfortable to wear high heels for long periods. Sleeveless was consistently frowned upon as unprofessional. In the face of such restrictions, you find that your choices narrow and it becomes habitual. Habit becomes hanging onto what you have because it works for the situation.
While I was pregnant, I relied on yoga pants and stretchy t-shirts. I was able to wear most of my clothes up to six and seven months with waist extenders. It seems that I’m still pretty rigid with what I want to wear, but also the cost of a whole new wardrobe for a few short months was a burden. Yoga pants and t-shirts were quite affordable. That, too, shapes your wardrobe choices—what can I afford to put on?
Styles are changing again, and they’re becoming much more likable in my opinion. Then again, the ability to choose one’s style, despite a widespread trend of styles, alleviates distaste. I do a lot of my shopping online now, and I find it much easier to get through the noise.
My style currently consists of jeans (with lots of sparkles on the pockets) and geek t-shirts with converse sneakers. At work, I’m in my Eddie Bauer cargos and either a sweater (cardigan or pullover) or a camp shirt or button down (which may or may not have a sweater vest over it). My shoes are oxfords or boots. I do have a favorite pair of heeled sandals or 40s style pumps that I will put on if my ankles can bear it.
Let’s hop on over and see what the other authors have to say about their personal styles…
