Authors are pretty crafty to begin with, don’t you think? I mean they craft books. That incorporates nearly everything, because they have to be able to describe and discuss their subjects clearly and authoritatively for the reader.

Considering writing is our job, other things become our hobbies. I like to do photography, digital art and traditional art–drawing, sketching, painting…all of that. It’s not a constant in my life though, between blogging, writing, authoring and a day job. However, you can view an extensive gallery I built up over a period of time when I wasn’t writing so much, and using the visual arts to battle my depression.

Another hobby of mine is jewelry making. You can see a gallery of my pieces here on the blog. I came into this by way of not being able to find pieces I needed to accessorize with my wardrobe. I got tired of scouring the shops online and in person, to no avail most every time. Or, buying something and never wearing it, because it goes with absolutely nothing, but I had to have it, because it was so interesting.

Anyone can do it. The tools are available to buy in your local craft shop, and beads, findings and other necessaries can be found there too. To expand your catalog, shop online. You’ll have to get a feel for the sizes, since you can’t hold them in your hand and eyeball them as a fit. All sorts of tutorials are available on line for those who want to go deeper than stringing beads on wire. How to crimp. How to wire wrap. All of that.

Most of my pieces are simple. I let the beads be the center of attention, not my wire work, or anything else. I make sets of necklaces and earrings, because those are the things I need. None of my pieces are for sale. I couldn’t imagine trying to keep up a stock and storefront on top of all that I already do. So, this is a personal craft. I’d recommend it to anyone who gets tired of shopping the limited selections out there. You can copy other pieces you have. Whatever, you feel like doing. It takes as little as ten minutes. The most I’ve spent is a half hour.

If you’re going to say, Oh, no I couldn’t be bothered. That’s cool. You can wear something form the stores that everyone else has, and really doesn’t go with your outfits. Me, I like to spend 10 minutes of my evening putting something together that will get noticed and actually set off my clothing.

This is a great idea for gifts (weddings, birthdays). It costs as much as you’re willing to invest in a piece.
