I was excited to see this piece making the rounds in December, not so excited about the title. It makes abortion sound like a fashion trend. Like, “Yay! God loves milkshakes!”
Abortion isn’t an easy decision for a woman to make. There are risks involved that affect her own health and future. There are factors that come into play that we cannot conceive of later in life. It’s not something that women just decide to go and do. Often, they’re scared, they’re suffering and they’re seeking help. Why women have abortions isn’t anyone’s concern but the woman who has decided to do so, not clergy, not neighbors, family or bosses, not even your best friend. How it is done is the purview of trained medical professionals; not clergy, not neighbors and not bosses, and certainly not politicians.
You want to stop abortion? Then provide real comprehensive sex education to young people and children. Then provide real and comprehensive birth control. Preaching abstinence is a joke that the numbers prove is useless and anyone should run from in horror. Praying to God isn’t going to change a damn thing. Throwing a tantrum and citing god and sanctity of life isn’t going to help either – especially when you send young people to fight wars, refuse to have tax dollars go to feeding the hungry child, or programs that help mothers raise healthy babies. You stop abortion by social safety nets, contraception and education. Laws never stopped a woman desperate for an abortion from getting one, but they have cause thousands of women to die for reaching out to back alley solutions. (BTW – thinking that’s okay doesn’t make you prolife either, it makes you a monster.)
