The Bible is often a disturbing text. I’m surprised that it isn’t a more popular read, but for the dogma surrounding it. Mostly, when I see postings on the internet defending entrenched ideas about how we as individuals are expected to behave morally, I think that the people who use The Bible have never actually read it. If they have read, they’ve forgotten the majority of the text, or the context or the rules. Thou shalt not judge, that is the purview of the lord. Yet, there they are passing judgment on everyone and condemning them to hell for not being lockstep with the ideas of evangelical right wing Christianity. They say, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior–trumping God and ignoring the true meaning of what they’re invoking in order to feel superior.
It’s extremely sad. The preoccupation with sex is perverse.
Above all, according to this same group of people, if you dream things or partake in the mystical arts of faith, then you’re the spawn of Satan–however, when one of their own does this, they’re a prophet (playing with snakes and talking about dreams they have of The Bible, insinuating that 
they are chosen people). Do they not feel special in their lives, that they have to make this shit up? First of all, it is said that God makes no mistakes–they counter with gay is an abomination. Women are help meets, they say that means they serve men. They eat pork, wear mixed fabrics, shave their faces, cut their hair and get tattoos. They place national interests above the personal. They condemn rape victims, sometimes children, to bare the fruits of rape and commune with their rapist for the rest of their lives.
This is a sick society based on a sick book that was put together by a sick king in the middle ages. Charlemagne convened a group of his favorite clergy and, upon pain of death, charged them with organizing scriptures that supported his reign and ideology. Those who opposed him were slaughtered. It was the first inquisition–well before Spain’s. The Gnostics were scattered. Those who did not go to church were forced to or put to death. The church was packed into Charlemagne’s neat little box of thinking–which was contradictory, convoluted and narcissistic. And, they were working from texts that had been translated multiple times already–each time, the translator giving his interpretation to the meaning of the words.
Yet, we’re told this is the word of God because he moved through those men (no women were involved in the production of these books, that would have been blasphemy). Westboro Church members visited Russell Brand and gave him this rigamarole. I destroyed their basis of hate just on that interview and their responses to questions. They state that unless God moves through 
you to do a thing, you will not do it. Therefore, I say, every act is Holy, for God moves through us to do those things. God created each of us, and he is perfect and his creations perfect, therefore not one of us is built wrong. End of the hate. Nope. The cognitive dissonance reigns.
That doesn’t mean we cannot arm ourselves and demand equality. Though women are subjugated by way of the morality and social teachings, Gays are oppressed, and people of color enslaved by the justification of slavery in “The Good Book”–we can counter with the knowledge of this book’s creation, and the intention behind it. That is well documented. We can also fight with the teachings of the New 
Testament from their supposed prophet, of whom they stand in direct contrast. Challenge the word of bigots–that is necessary to secure the promise of not only our nation but the peace we seek among all of humanity.
You don’t need religion to be a good person doing the morally right thing. In fact, it appears you need to lose your religion to act with morality. And, remember, being intolerant of intolerance is not intolerance. It doesn’t work like that, nor is that ironic.
