Talk about your favorite charity and why it’s your favorite?
Welcome back to another edition of the Open Book Blog Hop! If you’re new to the series, the authors included are grateful for your reads and appreciate, even more so, when you share our writings with your friends. If you’re new to the series, welcome aboard. Followers of the blog have already read an article sometime ago in which NYWolf.org was highlighted. It was a piece promoting the publication of my third novel and the first chapter in The Trailokya Trilogy. The books are not the only reason that this organization means a great deal to me. I was raised with dogs, and they share almost 99% of their DNA with wolves. I see wolves much like I see my canine companions: essential.
NY Wolf has ambassadors on property, but they do not engage in raising these animals for profit (zoos, private ownership, release). Instead, they are a research and education based facility. They do receive pups for integration in the packs that they have. Their most famous ambassador is Atka.
Part of their push is to change the centuries old perception of wolves as dangerous to man. Wolves are truly essential to a healthy ecosystem. Ranchers, however, would like to perpetuate the fable of the Big Bad Wolf, as it makes raising cattle a lot easier (in that world, they don’t have to watch for any predators, and can spend more time on other things on the ranch—like solitaire. Pardon my sarcasm, but there’s no reason they can’t keep an eye on their cattle, other than they don’t want, are too cheap to employ hands, and would prefer time on the x-box. I shed no tears for those who chose a hard life, imagining they were going to make millions on the meat trade, and lose a couple animals because they fail at doing their job).
Another reason man and wolf run into issues, is because humans continue to encroach on their territory. The areas in which wolves live are being torn apart to be developed into housing or commercial sites. Eventually, the forests will be gone, and wolves will have nowhere to go. This is also happening to species like the Mountain Lion, Coyote, and Fox, as well as Bears. Humans, instead of realizing they need to leave large areas of natural territory, instead blame the animals for being the animals that they are. (How dare they hunt and eat!)
NY Wolf sends their ambassadors to schools, museums, and even companies interested in educating people about the lordly canines under the organizations research and care. The animals in their care, are not harmed. Please read the studies they conduct here. They also are active in trying to save the Mexican Wolf population which is currently decimated and struggling to come back to viable numbers.
I have a lot of respect for NY Wolf. Not only is it local to Upstate NY where I live, they’re doing a great job spreading the love of wolves.

The holidays bring with them a desire to not only give presents to loved ones and friends, but to extend charity to those in need. Often, people want to put their money behind a charity that represents their values. That’s why I’m writing this blog. If you’ve been reading, then you know that I have a special place in my heart for dogs. I recommend adopting not shopping throughout the season, and you can give at your local shelter (avoid giving to large charities that spend most of their money on overhead), whether it cash or food and toys. They can use litter for kitties, too!
