I’ve never been much for reading gossip magazines, watching that sort of television, or engaging such behavior with colleagues, friends, or family. I find it to be not just a waste of time, but also a negative drain. To be honest, it’s harmful, to those the stories are written about and those who wallow in them. It’s like an emotional black hole. That said, there are papers that engage in crazy writing that doesn’t rely on sensationalizing real lives.
As a girl, I recall my grandparents’ coffee table covered in tabloids. I’d leaf through them, horrified by some of the stories contained in them. They really are the worst! I cannot even tell why my grandfather enjoyed them so much. Papa was an interesting man (World War II veteran of the Merchant Marine, father of four, GE employee, raised horses and dogs, went to Boy’s Town, golfer, boater, fisherman…refused to indoctrinate his children with religion—that was their decision when they were older, was the son of one of my favorite women and the woman who my daughter is named for, and there is so much unknown to me).
Among the tabloids on their table was Weekly World News. I’ll let you glory in what can be viewed on that site, for a moment. Yeah. How’d that taste? Like you needed to break out the popcorn, am I right? That’s how I felt when I looked at these papers. They were a case study in the absurd. Science fiction and fantasy combined in serial installments of glorious ramblings.
I found this paper so amusing that I kept my grandmother up one night laughing hysterically about Liberace being found alive in the Yellow UFO with Bigfoot, or something. I always thought that man was fabulous, but this raised him to a level beyond—even though the story was clearly fake (Bigfoot doesn’t ride in UFOs).
When I see these papers in the checkout line at the grocery store, I always take a look. They remind me of people that I miss a great deal. And, the Weekly World News is still a hoot.
