Are any of your characters fans of a particular sports team?
Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop! The authors included in this ongoing series wish to thank you for your reads. We appreciate, even more so, when you share our writings with your friends. If you’re new to the series, welcome aboard. The authors engage and impress weekly. Prepare to become a regular reader.
When I was a girl, I was signed up to play soccer (football to the rest of the world). I sort of liked it, but mostly didn’t. Focusing that long on one activity and running every witch way up and down the field was exhausting, and I was not that into it. I did like being around friends. Mostly those kids on the teams weren’t great friends. So it ended up being a great bore. Looking back on it, I’m somewhat fond. Just lukewarm feelings. Maybe, sport isn’t for me?
This said, I loved watching American Football with the family. It could bore me to tears, but being together and the food, and the mood was everything. The commercials could get entertaining, right along with Pat Summerall and John Madden. Who didn’t love John’s drawings? I’ll pause for a chuckle here. I really miss those fall days back in the 1980s. Excuse my melancholy nostalgia.
As much as I have positive feelings about sport, very positive if you mention the All Blacks, I haven’t contained sports topics in any of my work. Certainly my writing stems from fantasy, and nothing is more fantastical than the athletic, sexy man giving his all on the field. I’m definitely into it. That said, I also know that they’re no more special than your average male, and have their litany of issues. It dampens the mood. Hearing as many stories of abuse by sports players as I have, you get over more than the superficial in the moment.
But, don’t despair. What my books do talk about is abuse and the dynamics under which it manifests. I find these far more interesting and worthy topics for my time. Their proximity to abuse, though–maybe, at some point, sports will show up. Going into great detail of the game, however, is quite unlikely. As mentioned above, this stuff can bore me to tears. Bogging down my work with too much game would probably bore the reader too!
In the scope of human history, war has been one of our most popular pastimes. In some ways, it can be compared to sports, if you think of plays compared maneuvers, the desire to win or dominate the opponent–the fact that mostly men engage in it, and prowess and strength is a quality held in high regard on the field. We even refer to the use of weapons as the volley of cannon-fire/gunfire. Don’t forget, fencing is an Olympic sport. So, in a roundabout way, I may have included some things that are arguably sport.
Spy games and intrigue? Horseback riding? Sailing? Dog training? I got you covered.
Let’s hop on over to see what sports, if any, the other authors have included in their works. I’m curious to see if any of the fantasy or scifi writers have created a sport!
