OP-GHO: Operation Ghost

is the sequel to OP-DEC: Operation Deceit (2nd edition out March 16!) is in the writing process.

Here’s a tidbit to get you excited:

“Is Fox really a Jerry Kraut?” the boy asked after a long pause.

“We believe he is.”

The kid was made miserable by this. His dark eyes swam in tears, as his hero was torn to shreds in one swipe.

“And I delivered for em,” the boy mumbled. “He can’t be no Jerry Kraut. I don’t believe it.”

“That’s his game, kid. He makes people believe, so he can get their secrets.”

The boy glowered over his nose, puffing the last of the cigarette.

“Losing your heroes is part of growing up—It’s so you can be one yourself. Understand?” Jimmy said.

Proctor returned to him with an old rumpled envelope. Nothing was inside but a slip of paper bearing the address of the warehouse in Brooklyn. That at least tied Adler to the ring, though it said nothing of how he was connected. Jimmy gestured for his partner to keep going. Then, he looked to the boy, holding up the envelope.

“I’m sorry, kid.”

“He ain’t no Jerry Kraut,” the boy insisted.

It’s Official! K. Williams Will Author Sequel to OP-DEC – OP-GHO: Operation Ghost

It’s official! I’ve been researching and writing the sequel to OP-DEC: Operation Deceit all summer and fall. I have one more book that I absolutely want to get read before I continue. Have you read OP-DEC yet? If not, the rest of this is going to be a bit of spoiler…

The sequel will be named OP-GHO: Operation Ghost. Readers will continue in the Second World War era of espionage with their anti-hero Carsten Reiniger, as he returns State side to continue his intelligence work. Claire Healey is left wondering about her beau, and just who does he work for, the British or the Germans?

The Boston Sunday Globe covers the tragic Cocoanut Grove Fire, November 29, 1942

The sinister underbelly that is Reiniger’s secret world seethes into the posh life of New York. More than a few eyebrows are raised, most especially those of Special Agent Jimmy O’Donnell and his boss, the head of FBI Operation NY, Percy Foxworth. O’Donnell’s had his eye on Claire since they were children, and he sees an opportunity to play rescuer and steal her away from his rival.

Working in the shadows to sniff out his friend’s allegiance, British Agent Nigel Gray plays all sides until he can secure Carsten for the Allies – or at least be assured that he is already one of them. Not even his boss John Bevan is talking.

A series of events, including an assassination attempt on Reinger at the Cocoanut Grove in Boston, the very night of the tragic fire that killed hundreds, leads Gray to believe his younger counterpart isn’t all he seems. Feeling sorry for Claire, and concerned he’s been taken in by the greatest spy the world has ever seen, Gray works to bring Reiniger in to unpack his secrets and force a defection. If he doesn’t close the deal quickly, all may be lost.

About K. Williams:

K attended the State University of New York at Morrisville, majoring in the Biological Sciences, and then continued with English and Historical studies at the University at Albany, home of the New York State Writer’s Institute, gaining her Bachelor’s Degree. While attending UA, K interned with the 13th Moon Feminist Literary Magazine, bridging her interests in social movements and art. At the same time, K’s first book project, Blue Honor, was underway. Blue Honor originated as a creative final project and independent study, regarding the civil war, which places fictional characters into a non-fictional realm, to display the social realities of the time. “Scores Dead In Night Club Fire” – The Boston Globe, December 1942

OP-GHO, the follow up to OP-DEC, brings Carsten Reiniger back to audiences. After returning from Germany with Claire Healey and her aunt to New York City and a new life, his relationship with the girl has gone a few steps farther. Prepared to leave his bachelor days behind him, he works out the perfect time to ask her to marry him, but the moment is interrupted by a bomb. New York is home to a gregarious Nazi spy ring and they’re seeking help from the IRA to sabotage American installations. Claire is not so convinced that he’s left his spying days behind, and clues start popping up to insist that Carsten is still working for the Nazis.

Soundtracking to Inspiration – Open Book Blog Hop #398

If your WIP had a soundtrack, what songs would be on it?
Do you write with some sort of background noise or do you prefer silence?

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop! The authors included in this ongoing series wish to thank you for your reads. Even more so, we appreciate that you share our writings with friends. If you’re new to the series, welcome aboard. The authors engage and impress weekly. Prepare to become a regular reader.

I’ve written in the past about the soundtracks that I created while working on those books that are already published. You can look at those here. Each one had a playlist. So that is no different for my work in progress: OP-GHO: Operation Ghost. You can bet, because it is a sequel, that the list is pretty similar to the one I had for OP-DEC.

OG takes place in the 1940s right in the middle of World War II. The music I generally listen to is period appropriate, so anything up to that point is viable for the list. Would I have some harpsicord? Obviously not. Thus, the year of the setting and other relevant circumstances matter for what goes into the queue.

I like to find old radio programs and recordings. I also don’t limit my background sounds to just music. I’ll put on the television to occupy the part of my brain that never switches off. For that, in the past, I have used a lot of cartoons. It’s super busy and light, and my brain doesn’t focus in on it much. Putting on anything that would take the focus from the work at hand is counter productive. Therefore, I don’t mind if my kiddo puts on her programs or someone puts on something to watch as I sit in my chair with my laptop, tapping away.

Focusing on the work not only takes time, but the right mood. Music is a great way for me to click back into my groove, and movies are no different. Film from the period especially helps me get back on track. A long commute from work always provided a great way for me to find inspiration when I endured them in my life. Now that I live much closer to the day job, and don’t have a straight route, I can’t daydream about my writing. Since my days go by working and my evening focus is my daughter, it is much harder.

Music and film continue to inspire me when needed. I’m not concerned that I’ll lose my drive to write. It remains a skill I have at the ready, and quite often use at work. I’m only getting better! So, when I do sit down to write, I’m rested and fresh, and usually very inspired from all the mental trips I’ve taken on the ideas I have.

While I often use music and film to help me fix my mood to write, I also find that silence can be a great benefactor of inspiration. When there is silence for an extended period, my brain will fill the gap with all kinds of musings. This is super useful for working out ideas I may struggle to fully realize.

I guess this just shows my flexible nature! Depending on the instance, I will lean into music, a movie, or silence to get the job done. Accent Performance – Open Book Blog Hop #315

Can you speak in an accent that isn’t your own? Can any of your
characters do this? How do you indicate that in your stories?

My ability to do a successful accent is terribly low. Yet, I have characters who can run a gamut. One in particular in fact. I haven’t really thought about the ability of any others. Let’s explore!

Carsten Reiniger is a master spy. You can read about him in the novel OP-DEC: Operation Deceit. The next part of his chapter will be coming along soon. I’ve written the novel OP-GHO: Operation Ghost goes into greater detail about his history, and what accents are very real for him. In the first book, you’ll see him run an American, British, Belgian, and German accent. Not in that order, either. He’s fluent in French, German, English, and probably multiple other languages. I wager he’s familiar with some Nordic languages as well as Dutch. Likely, he knows Spanish.

Carsten slips into the accents that go with his mastered languages quite easily, too. His survival depends upon it. If he slips, that’s a gateway to death. We can all agree that’s a very strong incentive.

As for my other books, there’s no requirement of this level for any of the other characters outside of OP-DEC. However, you may find that the duta, souls, and danava of Trailokya could easily manage this cultural switch. I often try to imagine what a duta accent might sound like. Seriously, what would Zion’s citizens sound like? Something ancient Middle Eastern? A dialect-voice familiar in India?

Let’s explore these ideas a bit more. For instance, we know that Maiel has incarnated on Earth in different genders and different places. Therefore, she is familiar with multiple languages and cultures. Now, if I broke it down, you’d see that she’s an amazing language master. From this, you’d infer the obvious: Duta minds are limitless. Very powerful.

Unfortunately, I am not this skilled. Clearly, I know English well and I have studied both French and German but am not fluent (intermediate in the latter maybe). I feel that you need a proper handle on a language to do a fair accent well. Muddling a British accent is just muddling. I know they know I’m American, no matter how I try. That upstate New York sound will forever tinge my tones.
