What’s on your “TBR” (to be read) list?

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop! The authors included in this ongoing series wish to thank you for your reads. We appreciate, even more so, when you share our writings with your friends. If you’re new to the series, welcome aboard. The authors engage and impress weekly. Prepare to become a regular reader.

Oh, my. Why did this question have to come up? TBR (to be read) lists are a big time problem in the book world–for writers or readers. There’s so much I wanted to read growing up, and I tried to get copies and read them. I’ve done well, considering. I mean, I was an English major. I’ve read quite a bit! Currently, I’m trying to slog through HP Lovecraft. Which? Oh, all of them. It’s the complete works. There’s so much to read, and I am nowhere near the end of this journey. It’s hard to push through such problematic text, but the genre helps. And, this leads me to what else is on my list. I’m focused on more fantasy and science fiction work. On my nightstand, I have a copy of Good Omens.

That shouldn’t confuse you, though. I do a lot of research in historic texts to this day. I intend to read Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography. The Paine Papers are included on this list, and I have multiple other such texts. From there, I am intent on mythologies and theologies to extend my knowledge in that arena even further. A rudimentary understanding of the major world religions just isn’t sufficient.

Although many of the items on my kindle and physical shelf TBR seem like simple literature, they align with my focus on social reform and geek culture. Beside this, I have a lot to make up in the science fiction genre, because that was never respected by the spheres in which I moved–despite taking a course in high school dedicated to it. To be honest, that was the last time I got a good dive into those books.

Keeping up with reading is hard when you work full time and are raising a child. Don’t forget that I maintain this blog, and multiple social media pages, as well as producing books and screenplays, while pitching for my scripts, too. There’s so much going on. I barely have time to get the stuff on that list done, let alone reading.

When do I read? I also keep a workout regimen. That includes a spin session, so sometimes I study German when I spin, or read. Mostly, I just f– off listening to music, playing games on my phone, or watching TikTok videos. Everyone needs to switch off and out. That’s the only time I get during the day to do so. I can’t guarantee I want to read then. It’s kind of hard to get into and let go of a book within that span! You know what I mean. It’s much easier to just catch up email and tick at a game.

You can check out the list on my kindle in more detail here. You’ll find classic literature as well as works by some of my colleagues and friends. Yes, I also keep copies of my own work there. You never know when you’ll need it to show a contact and do networking. Referencing them is much easier via kindle, too. Do you ever have a question come up while working on a new piece? Or, a reader asks something, and you just can’t remember at that moment, so you need to look it up?

I’ve already read so many books, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to read more. I just wish our days were more conducive to the leisure. Maybe one day I will get to spend more time on books, mine and others, and bring that TBR list down to size!
