If you could choose one author, living or dead, to be your
beta partner, who would it be and why?

Welcome back to another Open Book Blog Hop! The authors included in this ongoing series wish to thank you for your reads. We appreciate, even more so, when you share our writings with your friends. If you’re new to the series, welcome aboard. The authors engage and impress weekly. Prepare to become a regular reader.

Beta readers are valuable to all authors. Although I don’t use them much anymore, they do provide a service to writers that could make a book that diamond out of the rough. But, who would I pick as a beta reader? A writer living or dead…both of my top choices have passed away. Yes, I have two that I would love to have as beta readers. Trust me that I’m not backing down from having both! If you knew me well, you’d already know who it was and that it’s not much of a surprise. They have a lot of skill in my areas!

Let’s get started.

My first beta reader would be Carrie Fisher. She helped doctor scripts but also wrote books. She was gifted. Carrie was also deadly blunt. She didn’t do this without heart, though. Miss Fischer was sharp as a tack and had the chops to back it up. I could seriously use her feedback on my work. I also dreamt of working with her on screenplays one day, but I am afraid that will never happen. So many of my idols have passed onto the next world. Although it is probably best we don’t meet those we idolize because they can’t live up to the expectations often held of them, More importantly, I feel sad that they are gone from contributing to the art.

Moving on, the second author on my list is the late J.R.R. Tolkien. This isn’t a fan girl moment either. Tolkien was a linguistics master. My fantasy series makes use of (spoken or phonetic) Sanskrit as the language of Zion. Being the mother of all languages despite being largely out of use, it creates a lot of uncertainty for me. I want to do justice to this complex and beautiful language, however, there are not many resources. Learning the language of India (Hindi) would be a great help! I plan studying it along with Mandarin, Welsh, Irish, and the German I am now undertaking. Languages are amazing!

Between Carrie Fisher and Tolkien, I think I would be all set to continue a glorious pursuit of my series. They would likely help me reach a depth I may never know with the work. So, it is my hope that these two are sitting near, lending a bit of their skill to my endeavor, I can imagine how busy they probably already are, and that is a lot to ask for someone they owe nothing to. Perhaps reading their work will be enough.
