Gediel, Primus and Wolf Leader. (n.) Order of Fenrir. Svargaduta grandson of the fallen prince of Erebus. He trains wolves and other canid souls to fight in the legions against the dark menace of Jahannam. Gediel is a member of the suspect group called watchers, a secretive sect of spies and observers.
Primus Gediel is one of the first individuals you meet in The Trailokya Trilogy. From that initial meeting, you get a sense of his intensity and dedication. Shadowy and secretive, the reader may infer that he is someone not to be trusted. Gediel will keep you guessing throughout the series about that. So who is Primus Gediel? Warning: Spoilers ahead.
Gediel is a member of the order of Fenrir, rank of Primus. This means he is well-respected and experienced. Upon his crown he wears a silver circlet, denoting his species of svargaduta (or svarg). This particular species of duta are quite powerful. In the christian and related traditions, they are referred to as Archangels. Gediel is also a watcher. This position in Zionic society is equivalent to the human secret service and special operations units of the military. Gediel, therefore, often works alone, but for his constant companion Chiron. If he does command a unit on a mission, it is made up of canids.
The canids are his main task: the training of these souls for the Legions and/or guardianship. His home is located in the wilds of Elysion. But, there is more to the reason for his location, which is revealed at the start of the trilogy: his relationship with Captain Maiel was seemingly taking a romantic turn when her ketu (like marriage) with a human soul was announced. Despite this, his feelings toward his long time friend do not ebb and, thus, Gediel exiles himself to Elysion to be far away. Deeper worries than his feelings for the Captain is that Gediel is the grandson of a vicious fallen (danava), Prince Gediel of Erebus. The persistence of his feelings warn him that he may also be near Burning Down.
The things that trouble Gediel make him an alluring member of the Zionic society. Those aware of him, and many are, are wary but intrigued. He remains among them in the light, but he cuts a dark figure against paradise. His silver hair and wings are unusual for someone of his age, usually the sign of one near rising, yet he retains his youthful features otherwise, denying that possibility. Gediel’s silver blue eyes are startling and shift to moon gold like those of a wolf whenever Maiel becomes a topic or is near. This signal is a sign of ketu, and should not be occurring in a duta of good-standing in regards to another duta already in ketu. (I have often written about ketu in other pieces regarding the series, but have not directly addressed it on it’s own–I promise to remedy that soon.) Gediel wears black from head to foot as part of both Fenrir and the Watchers. One of the main features of this uniform is a black cloak, which can make the primus look a bit like a wraith.
His appearance makes him a favorite among the young duta, who see him as an edgy anti-hero. None of them, however, truly know the primus and what truly drives him. His solitary existence has left him a loner. Gediel is never happier than when he is with the canids. Chiron returns this loyalty equally.
Although Gediel faces the ultimate destruction for a duta, he serves in his capacity with distinction. It is he that the king seeks out to take care of delicate matters, trusting that the primus’s thoroughness and discretion will find closure for Zion. Gediel enjoys his work, taking pride in his ability to enter Jahannam and face the forces of darkness on his own. There is little that scares him. You wouldn’t even find Gediel cowering from his grandfather or burning down. He would face it with stern resilience. This makes him quite the threat should he eventually fall. Thus, the greater portion of Zion remains dismayed and shows great care where he is concerned. The king, however, treats him as the greatest of his friends as does his general, Mikhael. His mother and sister are both firmly in this camp, as well.
