With the Memorial Day holiday marking the unofficial beginning of summer in the
United States, the season of cookouts and camping has arrived.
What are your “must haves” for these events?

Like my wardrobe, I like to coordinate other aspects of the world around me. Interior design is a favorite pastime of mine, of course. Similarly, I love gardening, although when the heat starts up in earnest, I can tend to slack off my duties. But, my seeds to plant a small herb garden and my flowers are a must have for the season. They bring me a great deal of joy, even if they can demand quite a bit of effort. In fact, I already have four tomato plants going, and my oregano has come back for another year, prettier than ever, too!
After that, I like to have some decor to mark the special occasions. For my door, I recently purchased a red white and blue star. I’d love a tin star, like the giant ones you see on barns, but I have to save my pennies to meet the bills these days. It will have to wait.
With the decor and a sweet little garden, I like to have summer flavors. Watermelon hasn’t been off the menu since my pregnancy. I think that because I am breastfeeding, some of the hormones are still lingering. It’s always been a favorite, but I eat it like it’s going out of style. Other menu items are baked beans, hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as picnic salads (pasta and potato). You can find my recipes for these under my Culinary K drop down. I’ll be sharing an alternative on the pasta salad in August.
When I was younger, our family pool was another must have, but it’s since fallen into disrepair and been removed. Maybe someday a pool will be available to me once more. I’d definitely appreciate one.
Let’s head on over and see what the other authors must have…
Cool. Memorial Day weekend is usually soil prep time here (anything earlier won’t survive), but this year spring has been late and overnight lows are still in the 40s, so we’ve put seeds in the ground, but our plants have to wait for sometime this week. It doesn’t get dark here now, so we can pretty much do that after work any night.
Yeah, that has got to be rough, but it is what you’re used to. You’d get so miffed at folks down here taking the weather for granted.
A family pool sounds lovely. I wish we had the space to have one.
