Asfodel Fields is located beyond and within the khajala barrier in Jahannam. It is a relatively large island province that caps the northern most regions of the dark realm. It also happens to be the brightest area there. The haze of midday is like a foggy afternoon with sunshine burning from somewhere. It has a yellow cast and the air is acrid. This is also the only place where anything grows, albeit rough asfodel and the odd tree.
The king of Zion wanted to create a middling area to accommodate those atman who had fallen, but deserved another chance before being cast into the darkness to be found in the rest of Jahannam. He wasn’t comfortable with making such a sentence black and white. He cares very much for his people, even the wayward ones. This is why burning down doesn’t lead directly to Oblivion without enough time to determine an undoing is absolutely necessary. He’s left Lucifer and the others to sort themselves out, while hoping they will realize their crimes and then work to clear their atman.
Asfodel is one of the important stages in providing a means for an atman to waken to their error. The territory is a seemingly endless field. An atman who finds their way there will ideally wander and inevitably reflect upon why they may be there. This is similar to the idea of purgatory in some of the human Christian faiths.
Though the fields are surrounded by the khajala, marditavya and danava do find their way through. Atman drowning in the Domdaniel can also crawl onto the shores. These beings can be quite dangerous to the fallen, but some find their way there because they have paid a heavy price for their crimes in the Domdaniel and ready to make their way to rise again. Those marditavya and danava, as well as other fallen atman, that find their way in to the fields could choose to feed on the wanderers. Once an atman feeds on another, they have become marditavya. Their route to rising again is now complicated further, if not irreparably.
Danava who can access the area use it to hunt atman for food. This was never an intention of King Adonai, but he has 
responded with guardian squads that routinely retrieve wrongly absconded atman from the depths of Jahannam. However, and atman that has fallen and not paid their sentence cannot rise beyond the barrier. They will be brought back to the fields until the sentence is complete.
The asfodel spaces do not contain sustenance except for the dull light that covers the region in its trademark storm-gold glow. Technically, it would be considered a semi-arid desert. Visibility is greatly limited by the khajala that has diffused throughout the island. It causes confusion while also providing some protection. Even though danava and marditavya hunt here, finding a wandering atman is a challenge for them. With their stunted abilities and loss of senses, the advantage could be said to be the quarry’s.
