There’s no argument to make against the numbers Emma Watson put forward in her speech, however, I am sure that there are groups out there who will say that numbers are lies. Yet, half the population remains underrepresented in nearly every aspect of human endeavor (not just the Davos meet). A little research will easily prove these naysayers wrong, but for those that don’t want this to be true, whatever their reasons, that is enough to make them stop listening. That’s a dangerous end result, but exactly what’s sought–the shutdown.
#HeForShe came into being pretty much just on that basis. It was a means to involve men in the fight for equality for half the population of humans. Why this impassioned plea for consideration has gone unheard until now, is a long history of pseudo-scientific and cultural beliefs. The weaker sex is a term that still pervades the vocabulary of the world. Weaker? I think the videos of men simulating birth pangs denies that ridiculous idea.
Emma’s campaign (it’s not just hers but the work of many) is gaining traction because of the absurdity of gender inequality in our world. Imagine, if you will, a world that accepted women as equals generations ago. We would be 50% further along–at least. The undervalued abilities of women have held humanity back. We might already be frequenting space, have a cure for cancer, no global climate catastrophe at hand, and resolved hunger issues and poverty. Instead, we repress and by doing so, hinder our future greatly. But, don’t let me convince you. Emma has the numbers:
