Lapham’s Quarterly is fast becoming a favorite haunt of mine. You’ll see them blogged about a lot here on Blue Honor Blog. When Professor Hightrousers shared this on his Facebook page, I could hardly resist comment. After all, Jane is a fellow female author. Thus it brought up another vein of interest for me: the female comic.
Perhaps the reason that Jane Austen’s novels are not found comedic in their film adaptations of late is that Women are thought not to be funny. Until Tina Fey and Amy Poehler pierced the wall of the closed set, it was just a forgone conclusion. In other words, a forethought of Institutionalized Sexism. How ironic is that? Jane was writing in the Regency period about the very same thing! Yet, here we are in 2014 not a step budged forward really. Fey and Poehler, however, are making a good push, but this is their last run at the Globes, according to television sources. The film Bridesmaids (2011) even made inroads. Women are funny, people! I’ll let Ted Scheinman tell you about it…
